Devonshire Digital Weekender – Storytelling: True & Untrue

We are delighted to announce that our next Digital Weekender, Storytelling: True & Untrue, will take place 9-11 February 2018 and will embrace true fiction and fake news explored through film, spoken word and art workshop & performance. The Weekender is curated by Jon Pratty and Amy Zamarripa Solis. Expect three days of fun digital art and culture for all ages, including games, film, workshop, music, tweetup, stuff for kids & families, talks, DJ and socials.
 
Programme Highlights include:
  • Fri 9 Feb – Truth of Fiction, Digital Weekender Launch event compered by comedian Jo Neary, featuring talks journalists Ginny Dougary and artist and technologist Shardcore, plus live DJ set by Tim Maughan
  • Sat 10 Feb – Performance of CiRCA69’s The Cube, a 3D VR immersive work based on the strange but true story of the disappearance of nine people in 1959
  • Sat 10 Feb – Author and Journalist Tim Maughan – Fake News and Real Fiction, an exploration through readings and short films of how the lines between his fiction and non-fiction writing can become blurred. Digital culture champion Mar Dixon – Smile: You’re on Camera, a discussion about why live streaming and 360 seems to be everywhere.
  • Sat 10 Feb – Animazing TV stop-motion workshop for children
  • Sun 11 Feb – Virtual Reality Production Workshop with Simon Wilkinson (CiRCA69) using Unity games engine

Slowness: an exhibition exploring storytelling, The Chinese Room & Site-Eye

In an age of fibre-optic broadband, high processing gadgets and our ever-increasing appetite for fast disposal content and information, we are living in an age of speed.

For our February 2018 exhibition, we present two bodies of digital art work whose process and construction is based on slowness and looking again. Free entry, 11am-5pm, DC1 Cafe & Gallery

Truth of Fiction: Digital Weekender Launch event

Join us for an evening with talks exploring the fine line between fact and fiction, compered by none other than comedian Jo Neary! With Ginny Dougary, Shardcore and Tim Maughan (DJ set). Tickets £10, 6-9pm, DC1 Cafe & Gallery

The Cube performance – CiRCA69

Telling the strange story of the disappearance of 9 people in 1959, CiRCA69 worked with Burley Historical Society’s collection of letters left behind by 8 of the disappeared to craft a tale in virtual reality that places you at the centre of the mystery.

The Cube performances will take place in 2 areas of DC1 Cafe & Gallery from 12pm-8pm every 15 minutes starting on the hour. Performance is 15 minutes long. Please arrive at least 5-10 minutes before your show start. Tickets are non-refundable.

Character Comedy Masterclass with Jo Neary

This is the first of a series of experimental work in progress. Come dip your toe in this new comedy masterclass with the awesome Jo Neary. Tickets £7, 12-3pm, DC1 Gallery

Designing BourneCoin, Eastbourne’s new digital currency: role for local artists?

Andrew Durling, founder of the BourneCoin project, outlines his passionate conviction that digital money is an exciting new frontier in cultural life and gives his suggestions for how local artists could contribute to the design and evolution of a local currency. Free entry, 1-2pm, DC1 Cafe

Stop-motion Animation Workshop by Animazing TV

For Animazing TV’s February animation workshop, you’ll be developing a story, designing and constructing a cardboard village, and filming this using stop-motion animation. Tickets £12, 1-4pm, ages 8-16, DC3 Workshop Space

Smile, You’re On Camera! 360 + live streaming workshop

Digital culture champion Mar Dixon will run a one-hour workshop on Live Streaming. This will include an Introduction to Insta360 (iPhone only) and using Facebook/Instagram Live stream. Tickets £7, 3-4pm, DC1 Cafe. Ages 12+

Storytelling in Social Media, Fiction & News

A fun evening of talks, live DJ, and drinks featuring Jon Pratty, Mar Dixon, and Tim Maughan. Tickets £10, 6-9pm, DC1 Cafe & Gallery

Virtual Reality Production Workshop with CiRCA69

A one day workshop aimed at getting participants making virtual reality using Unity games engine led by Simon Wilkinson , described by Cineuropa Magazine as ‘one of the most notable names in Europe to be dealing with VR’. Tickets £15, 10am-4pm, DC3 Workshop Space

Truth Within The Lie creative writing workshop

Author Stephen King once said ‘Fiction is the truth within the lie’. With this as inspiration, come write your own flash fiction short story. With Justine Taylor. Tickets £15, 11am-2pm, DC1 Gallery

Glitch Your Self(ie) Family Drop in Workshop with Fotofonty

Writing Masterclass with Tim Maughan

Join us for a one-hour session where you can share your own writing in a small intimate group setting and hear Tim read from his fiction. Ideal for writers of science fiction, fantasy and speculative fiction. Open to all. Sunday 2.15-3.15pm. Tickets £7. DC1 Gallery
