Eastbourne’s Devonshire Ward is home to a rich variety of food and drinks retailers from around the world. The Seaside Road area of the ward has a particularly vibrant community of restaurants and cafes and is also home to Devonshire Collective’s new gallery, studios, and artists’ workshops. Food Chain is a new photographic commission conceived to engage with the food retailers in our community, to strengthen relationships and provide visitors to Seaside Road with an insight into the lives and inspirations of the people behind this food scene.

We are recruiting a mid-career photographer or artist from the South East to coordinate the project, which will begin in late 2017 and culminate in an exhibition in DC1 gallery and public installations next year.

Who we are looking for

  • A photographer with experience in delivering commercial and/or visual art projects to a high standard.
  • You must have good technical ability; to instruct amateur photographers, edit images, oversee printing and assist participants in creating images for the project.
  • You must have good social and organizational skills. This project involves working within a community of retailers with busy schedules, inviting people to participate as subjects as well as to involve local photographers in the process.

Project structure

This project will represent the personalities and stories of Seaside Road food retailers by combining their portraits and stories in photographs and texts. These will be displayed in windows and outdoors on Seaside Road and the surrounding area of Devonshire Ward throughout 2018, and in an exhibition at the end of the year.

The project coordinator will run 3 participatory workshops in winter 2017/18 to involve local photographers in the project. The workshops will take participants through the whole process of creating the body of work.

The project coordinator will have overall responsibility for printing the works for exhibition and arranging text for wall panels.
