Light Dial part 3 is the continuation of an ongoing experimental collaborative project between Collectress (artists/musicians Rebecca Waterworth, Quinta, Caroline Buckley and Alice Eldridge) and artist duo Rutter & Bennett. Through sharing methodologies, improvisation, discussion and doing as a form of making, the artists will work together to create musical compositions, drawings, collages and choreographed movement. A live performance at the exhibition launch, for which they will be joined by artist/musician Lauren Doss, will form the starting point for the creation of new work which will be exhibited alongside a film of the original Light Dial performance and further artefacts relating to the project.
Light Dial was initiated as part of the Rambert New Choreography Platform 2016 and is an ongoing investigation into the creative methodology of musicians/composers Collectress, dancer/choreographer Miguel Altunaga from Rambert and artistic duo Rutter and Bennett. Through improvisation and workshop driven practices, musical compositions and choreography have been developed that explore the disciplinary boundaries of musician, dancer/performer, choreographer and artist. The project tests the limits and constraints of the body as a continuously ‘live’ object, in order to explore improvisation (and ‘liveness’) against inherent restrictions of bodily movement, form and sound in relation to pattern.
Collectress are an all female multi-instrumentalist quartet whose broad and dense experimental structures utilise voice, toy instruments, everyday objects and found sound alongside strings, keys and woodwind. Central to their approach is recording and working ‘live’ with a focus on process, play and improvisation, tracing a link back to the tradition of chamber music. Their resulting compositions are richly textured, haunting and incisive. Collectress’s live shows include experimentation with movement and explorations into the relationship between performer and audience, embracing chance interruptions and audience exchange. Collectress have performed extensively in the UK including at the Whitechapel Gallery, National Gallery, Cecil Sharpe House and Kings Place, London and have a long track record of collaborating, both as a collective and as individuals. This collaboration further expands Collectress’s porous and resourceful approach to music-making.
Artist duo Chris Rutter and Evelyn Bennett collaborated with Collectress to create wearable textile sculptures and live projected collage for the Light Dial project. Their wearable textile sculptures for performance incorporate visual narrative within the textile imagery, which both reflects the development process and compliments the performance narrative or theme itself. Having worked closely together for over 20 years Rutter & Bennett’s practice spans public art, sculpture, performance, textile design, poetry and music. They have made a variety of work from large-scale public art, collage, installations, sculptural performance pieces & soundscapes. A sculptor and textile designer respectively, they approach projects with interest in material play and often work within cross-disciplinary collaborations.
