Holding Space at DC3
October 17 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
What is Holding Space? Holding Space is a safe space for families to come together who are caring for someone with a mental illness. Predominantly a child but it could be anyone within the family.
Our vision is to open a holistic centre where families can share their stories, laugh, hug, cry, connect. Somewhere where they feel safe and not judged. A heart centred approach.
Support will be available for the whole family – the parent, the person going through their mental health journey, the siblings; the extended family. We will offer access to support and a range of treatments from professionals and therapists.
We will also offer peer-peer support from those who have come out the other end. To know that this is just an illness and it doesn’t define you. That there is life after mental illness.
We will hold educational workshops for parents, children/teenagers. We will empower people so that they can better manage their own and others mental health. Let’s end the stigma on mental health. The aim is to transform the lives of future generations.
We will work with councillors and statutory bodies locally to make changes – we would like to be involved in shaping and influencing services locally for those experiencing mental illness.
Why are we doing this. Because the journey is a lonely one. There is no support locally for families. Too many families are coping alone; no where to turn; no one to talk to. Alone and frightened. Parents questioning where they went wrong when in reality they didn’t! It’s a journey.
Holding Space is a collaboration of 15 professionals and therapists with a passion and interest in mental health. We have also had one family consultation and have asked the following questions – what are the gaps, what is needed, how can we support you, how can we make this work. Where is this safe space?
We are delighted to be working in collaboration with The Devonshire Collective and launching a family support group in September. The support group will be a drop in and will run weekly on Thursdays from 10-12pm at DC3. We will offer a safe space for families to meet the team and talk, connect and be supported.
Other dates: Thursday 12th, 19th Sept and Thursday 17th, 24th, 31st October 2019
