JAMES JOYCE’S ULYSSES
James Joyce (1882-1941) was an Irish novelist, short story writer, poet, teacher and literary critic. He is regarded as one of the most influential and important authors of the 20th Century. He is best known for his novel Ulysses(first published in 1922) – a landmark work in which the episodes of Homer’s Odyssey are paralleled in a variety of literary styles – most famously – stream-of-consciousness.
AN INTRODUCTORY ULYSSES EVENT
Join Lucy Brennan Shiel to explore the text, look at some well-known passages, grapple with some perplexing words, highlight Joyce’s experimentation and enjoy the naughtiness!
Lucy has been running a Ulyssesreading group in Hastings since 2017 and she has organised annual Bloomsdayevents in Hastings. (Bloomsdaycommemorates the 16th June 1904 – the day on which the events of James Joyce’s Ulysses take place in Dublin.)
Lucy is an Irish artist living and working in Hastings since 2010. Lucy has been exploring Joyce’s Ulysses as part of her creative practice for a number of years. She is inspired by its experimentation, universality, immense positivity and generosity.
Lucy believes that Ulysses is best explored and enjoyed by reading it aloud in a friendly gathering and is passionate about sharing its magic.
