VOLT is excited to present an exhibition by London-based artist Lucy Woodhouse. Broken Water showcases a multimedia installation and alive online broadcast, both inspired by the artist’s recent experience of sedation and ultrasound body scans. Adopting the visual language of such procedures, Woodhouse poses the body as a conduit for surreal encounters and a gateway into an alien world.

Upstairs a new multichannel film installation juxtaposes the flow of the body with the push and pull of the tides; semi abstract forms take us in and out of the familiar while images sync and separate in rhythmic waves. Occasional flashes of white light illuminate the space before we are taken back into the ebb and flow of the water. A soundtrack has been created from recordings of computers and scanners, contrasting the complexities of the human body with the inner workings of technological devices.

Broken Water poses the shoreline as a point of departure and transformation, and features a series of sculptures that use sand, rocks and shingle to create casts of the body. These static forms contrast the motion of the videos but reflect ideas of metamorphosis and transience that flow throughout the exhibition.

Accompanying the upstairs presentation is an online broadcast and sound installation showing the results of entering ultrasound scans into GanBreeder. This software uses AI to combine existing images into new ones, while the sound is created by converting images into audio files. This artwork will continue to generate new imagery and be updated by the artist remotely over the course of the exhibition.

Broken Water explores medicine, digital technologies and the environment, and questions how our bodies are both connected and separated through our interactions with the modern world.
