Conjunction is an exhibition of new and recent works by artist Harun Morrison at Devonshire Collective’s VOLT gallery that explores language, linguistics and miscommunication.
Exhibition Opening: Saturday 2 November 2024, 2 - 4pm. Free, all welcome.
The works play with multiple notions of conjunction. Firstly at the level of language, where a conjunction is a part of speech that connects words and phrases. FANBOYS, the name of the T-shirt range, is an acronym for a series of popular conjunction words: FOR, AND, NOR, BUT, OR, YET, SO. Each of these words features on an individual shirt. The label of each T-shirt features a short story by writer Samantha McCulloch. The stories respond to Eastbourne and its seaside architecture.
Photographs of friends wearing the T-shirts have been shot on Eastbourne beach. This is partly inspired by readings of the beach as a liminal space, and ecotone (a transitional space between two ecosystems). A number of works consider the beach itself as a conjunctive zone between the sea and land.
Finally, in astrology a conjunction occurs when two or more planets, or the moon and the sun, appear very close to each other in the sky from our perspective on Earth. An assembly of found materials based on the astrological symbol for conjunction is the basis for a series of new sculptural works.
The works in the gallery are accompanied by the launch of an online platform, Host Index, marking a new body of work that considers conjunctive, symbiotic and parasitic relationships between artworks. The FANBOYS T-shirt range are themselves an artwork that will also find an eventual home in another artists’ body of work, the ongoing performance lecture ‘T-Shirt Conversations’ by Belgium based duo, Buren.
