Join us for a creative afternoon where you’ll have the chance to create your own story, mixing words and images. In this workshop, led by the artist Marie Sahy, we’ll explore how we can use the medium of graphic novel in science fiction. Dystopia or utopia…? Imagine what the future looks like with a one-page story.
During this 3-hour workshop, we will look at some inspiring examples of sci-fi works. You will then develop characters from the future and build a world around them. With these elements in hand, you will then build a small narrative for a one-page graphic novel. The idea is to be playful with the medium: you’ll be encouraged to explore using different techniques, bringing your vision to life with speech bubbles and panels.
You do not need previous experience of making graphic novels to join the workshop.
Free to attend, booking required. All materials will be provided.
Artist Bio:
Marie Sahy is a visual artist based in Brighton. Having grown up in Switzerland, she was immersed in the Franco-Belgian culture of bande dessinée. Then, through more experimental graphic novels, she discovered a rich potential for expression. Often punctuated with humour and cynicism, her work addresses themes such as existentialism and feminism. She takes inspiration from her own personal life, creating scenes which allow her to comment on the world around her.

The Canopy is Sean Steadman’s first solo exhibition in a UK public institution. First and foremost a painter, Steadman is invested in the medium’s specificities and its ability to draw out emergent visual forms. At Devonshire Collective, Steadman presents newly commissioned and recent works that connect processes of painting and printmaking.
