Deep Shallow (A Great Increase In Business Is On Its Way II) presents new work in sculpture, sound and moving image by Taiwanese, London-based artist Steph Huang. Both an artist and a chef, Huang looks at food as a ritual, and as one of the oldest forms of exchange between cultures.
For the second chapter of A Great Increase In Business Is On Its Way, Huang has shifted her focus from food markets to the fishing industry, conducting a number of research trips to Brixham fishing port, once known as the ‘Mother of Deep-Sea Fisheries’, where she immersed herself in the culture and communities of the fishing industry and worked alongside trawlers, basket weavers and lobster pot maker
Huang’s exhibition transforms the lower gallery into a cold room: a place for processing and storing the daily catch. Huang’s theatrical, immersive installation is inspired by the pure blue of Brixham’s seawater and the liveliness of the harbour. Seaweed, hand-blown glass and the sound of trawling and crashing waves animate the gallery with the traditions and sensations of the fishing industry.
