Riviera looks to reflect the day-to-day lived experience of belonging. Multi-cultural communities are celebrated through a textile project visible in both domestic and public space, such as community centres and outdoor awnings.

Artist Navine G. Dossos has been conducting workshops with residents of Eastbourne's Devonshire Ward to create Riviera: a communal-and-community-designed textile pattern made from stencils relating to the neighbourhood.

From 27 July - 15 September 2024, VOLT gallery will be a hub for Riviera, an exhibition with a functioning studio that invites residents and visitors to take 2m of fabric each, for free, to then create a variety of items and clothing.

Navine G. Dossos has worked with over 50 Eastbourne residents through the creation of 24 stencils relating to the neighbourhood: its history, its population, its businesses, its flora and fauna and its location in the town. Together they have developed a Devonshire Ward-specific language of symbols, featuring palm trees, local gelato, a movie camera and the pier. These elements have been brought together by Dossos to fashion a rich and vibrant textile.

The basic premise of Riviera began with the history of the palm trees found across the ward. The planting of these kinds of exotic trees was to create a sense of travel, of being elsewhere, and reference an otherness or foreignness related to holidays abroad. Many British seaside resorts modelled themselves on the idea of the French and Italian rivieras.

With Mediterranean communities living in the Devonshire Ward today, along with many other people from around the world, what was once alluded to in architectural detail is now part of the everyday cultural life in Devonshire Ward.

There will be an accompanying public programme of events, including sewing and making workshops, talks and performances. The exhibition will celebrate the process behind the community design of the fabric and the launch of the project in Devonshire Ward, whilst disseminating the community-owned artwork throughout the area, from shop awnings in the street, to upholstered chairs at community centre Leaf Hall, to tote bags for use at the Seaside Community Fridge.

If you are a local community group and interested in taking part in the project, please email Polly Wright (Curator, Devonshire Collective): polly@devonshirecollective.co.uk

Navine G. Dossos (she/her, b.1982) is a visual artist working between London and Aegina, Greece. Her interests include geometry as information and decoration, image calibration, and Aniconism (the absence of artistic representations or icons) in contemporary culture. She has developed a form of geometric abstraction that merges the traditions coming from Islamic art with the algorithmic nature of the interconnected world we live in. This is not the formal abstraction we understand from the western history of art, but something essentially informational, and committed to investigation and communication. Her work is increasingly developed through collective workshop sessions and exists mostly in the public realm.

Riviera is a public art commission led by Towner Eastbourne in collaboration with Devonshire Collective.
